WHO Urges Countries to Ease Travel Bans Amid Ebola Outbreak in Central Africa

(MENAFN) According to reports, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has called on countries to reconsider travel restrictions and border closures introduced in response to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.

Several states, including Canada and the United States, have imposed travel limitations and visa suspensions for individuals arriving from affected countries such as Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan, citing public health concerns linked to the outbreak. In addition, Rwanda and Uganda have introduced restrictions on cross-border movement with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which remains at the center of the outbreak.

Tedros made the remarks during a press briefing in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, which has been identified as the epicenter of the current outbreak. He stressed that international cooperation and solidarity are essential in controlling the spread of Ebola, warning that restrictive travel measures could discourage timely reporting of cases.

He also emphasized the importance of placing local communities at the center of the response to the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, noting that there is currently no approved vaccine or treatment for this variant.

According to reports, he stated: “We are not here to tell people what to do. We are here to listen,” he said. “Communities understand their own challenges and their own solutions. Our role is to support you in implementing those solutions, together,” he said.

Health data released by the World Health Organization indicates that at least 134 confirmed cases have been recorded in the ongoing outbreak across Congo and Uganda, with 18 confirmed deaths.

Authorities in Congo also report a growing number of suspected cases, with more than 1,000 recorded since the outbreak was officially declared on May 15.
